18.6 Million Taxpayers Owe the IRS — What’s Your Plan?
If you owe money to the IRS, you may feel like you are the only person dealing with it.
You are not.
Approximately 18.6 million individual taxpayers owe overdue federal taxes, representing about 4.2% of the U.S. population. Collectively, Americans owe roughly $316 billion in past-due taxes, penalties, and interest.
Those numbers are significant, but when you are the person opening an IRS notice, the national statistics are not what matter most.
What matters is your situation—and your plan.
Your IRS Balance Is Only Part of the Story
When taxpayers see an IRS balance, many immediately assume there are only two choices:
Pay the entire amount or accept whatever payment the IRS offers.
That is not always the case.
Before deciding how to handle an IRS problem, it is important to understand the complete picture, including:
How much the IRS says you owe
Which tax years are involved
Whether all required tax returns have been filed
How much of the balance consists of penalties and interest
Your current income and necessary living expenses
Your assets and available equity
Your ability to pay
The IRS collection status of the account
Whether you may qualify for a different resolution option
The same IRS balance can result in very different outcomes for two different taxpayers.
That is why a strategy should be based on your individual financial circumstances—not simply the amount showing on an IRS notice.
Ignoring the IRS Is Not a Strategy
One of the biggest mistakes taxpayers make is waiting because they are afraid of what they may find out.
Unfortunately, an unresolved tax problem usually does not disappear simply because the notices are unopened.
Penalties and interest may continue to increase, and the IRS has collection tools available when accounts remain unresolved.
The goal should be to move from uncertainty to information.
Once you understand exactly where you stand, you can begin evaluating the options available to you.
There May Be More Than One Way to Resolve an IRS Balance
Depending on the facts of your case, potential resolution strategies may include an installment agreement, penalty relief, hardship status, an Offer in Compromise, lien or levy assistance, appeals, amended filings, or other available IRS procedures.
Not every taxpayer qualifies for every option.
That is why I do not believe the first question should simply be:
“How much can I pay every month?”
The better questions are:
Why do I owe this amount?
Is the balance accurate?
What does the IRS currently know about my financial situation?
What options am I actually eligible for?
What strategy gives me the best path forward?
Your Balance Does Not Define Your Options
Seeing a five-figure or six-figure IRS balance can feel overwhelming.
But the number printed on a notice does not automatically tell you what the final resolution will look like.
There may be opportunities to address penalties, establish manageable payment terms, challenge incorrect assessments, request collection relief, or pursue another resolution based on your circumstances.
The key is knowing the rules before making decisions.
The Most Important Question: What’s Your Plan?
There are millions of taxpayers dealing with IRS balances.
You are not alone.
But your case deserves more than a one-size-fits-all answer.
If you have received an IRS notice, owe back taxes, have unfiled returns, or have been trying to resolve an IRS problem without making progress, the next step should be understanding exactly where you stand.
Do not make decisions based only on fear, assumptions, or the amount printed at the top of an IRS notice.
Get the facts.
Understand your options.
Then build a plan.
